Why Must Visit Jonker Street
Jonker Street houses some of the
Melaka's oldest dwellings or houses dating back to the 17th century.
Many are owned by the Baba Nyonya or Cina Peranakan, is also informally
known as the antique street. The antique shops here are featuring
artifacts from different periods of colonial rule, that is, during
Portuguese, Dutch, and British days. There are also antique coins from
the Melaka Malay Sultanate days, Baba Nyonya porcelain and attire,
stamps and others.
In 19 June 2000, the Melaka State Government had utilized the richness of heritage values in this narrow antique street by transforming Jonker Street into a lively cultural street.
Some of the Chinese clan and dialect associations also organize activities in their respective buildings during weekends for visitors. These activities include line dancing classes, Chinese classical instrumental shows, and karaoke sessions. In order to encourage more cultural activities to be held at Jonker Street, a permanent stage is also built at the end of the street for performances.
From Friday to Sunday, starting from 6.00pm to 12.00am(sometimes
later),traders are lining along the pedestrian street and setting up
stalls to sell products such as antique copper coins, local and ethnic
traditional food, unique arts and crafts, souvenirs, ornamental jewelry,
and wooden clogs. These traders are addition to the existing shops. So,
you will be able to savor the good food and shop at the same time.
This makes Jonker Street a must-go place while traveling in Melaka.
