Introduction to Malacca

Malacca appeal lies it its rich colourful past. Its 600 years of history is reflected in its ancient building, intriguing street, delectable cuisine and unique cultural heritage. 

In the 16th century, Malacca enjoyed a reputation as the foremost maritime trading centre in the region. Merchants came from as far as Arabia, China, India and Europe to conduct trade in silk, spices, gold and porcelain.  

So coveted was Malacca by the European powers that it was ruled successively by the Portuguese Dutch and the British until the Federation of Malaya was formed on the 31st of August 1957.

With such a wealth of history, it is no surprise that Malacca is a major tourist destination, and is destined to be an even more significant one, having been inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site on 7 July 2008.

Where is Malacca located in Malaysia

Melaka is located on the Western Coast of Peninsular Malaysia facing the Straits of Melaka, about 147 kilometers from Kuala Lumpur and 245 kilometers from Singpore. Melaka is actually found in the middle of the states of Negeri Sembilan and Johor. It can be reached by roads from Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. Internally it is serviced by a very good network of roads leading to all the historical places of interest. It covers and area of 658 square kilometers and is divided into three districts namely Alor Gajah, Melaka Tengah and Jasin.


Malacca population 

Malacca has an estimated population of 931,210 as of 2016 with an average annual population growth of 2%. As of 2016, 27% of the population aged below 15 years old and 8% aged above 60 years old. The ethnic composition of Malacca as of 2015 is 66.8% Malays (552,700), 1.4% other Bumiputras (11,500), 26% Chinese (215,000), 6.2% Indian and Chitty (51,400) and 0.6% others (4,800).

  • The month August and December have nice weather with a good avarage temperature. 
  • A lot of rain falls in the month March, April, May, June, July, August, September, October, November and December. 
  • On average, the warmest month is April and the coolest month is August 
  • November is the wettest month and January is the driest month.
